Dinesh D’Souza: Conservatives Must Use “Any Means Necessary” to Save America from the Left’s “Police State”

An interview with conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza on the goal of his new film Police State: To scare audiences into resisting government tyranny.

The most troubling trend in America today is that citizens fear their government, instead of the other way around.

This was clear when I worked as a researcher and adviser for Dinesh D’Souza’s 2020 election documentary, 2000 Mules. It’s even more apparent now, working on his upcoming film: Police State.

Both projects highlight a terrifying reality. Americans are seeing their personal freedoms rapidly deteriorate.

In recent years, parents have been arrested for speaking up at school board meetings. Political opponents of the Left have been prosecuted and jailed. Pro-life Christians are sent to prison for protesting the death of the unborn. And people of faith are preparing to die, simply for their religious beliefs.

This sounds more like a third world nightmare than the United States we grew up in.

D’Souza and I both see where the country is headed, yet we’re still hopeful Americans can reclaim their liberties and secure freedom for future generations. That window is quickly closing, however, and if the nation doesn’t act soon, we will witness the end of modern America—and with it–the collapse of Western civilization.

“The tide can be turned but it’s going to take a real effort,” Dinesh told my group, Restoration of America, in a recent interview. “Let’s look at censorship. In a typical police state, the centralized government controls the censorship apparatus and essentially directs the media. There’s either no independent media, or [it’s] an extension of the regime. . . Interestingly, we have a censorship apparatus that involves the government and many agencies of the government, but it also involves academia.”

A vital pillar of the police state is indoctrination inside the classroom. If the younger generation is brainwashed into thinking the Constitution is outdated and our history is racist, American ideals become easier to destroy.

I’ve witnessed biased teachers in Catholic and public schools alike, who were in lockstep on issues including: gun control, climate change, revisionist history, and Critical Race Theory. They also seemingly showed a special hatred for Christianity—especially its role in America’s founding.

“You find that across the humanities and the social science, there is this progressive dominance. The problem isn’t with the subjects,” D’Souza pointed out, “It’s with the way in which the subjects are taught.”

Only 10–15 years ago, “nobody could get away with saying ‘I want a safe space. I never want to hear an idea that I don’t agree with and you’re triggering me.’ There was just no currency for this kind of thing,” the author of Obama’s America: 2016 stated. “The fact that we’ve gone into this new environment, I think, is very bad.”

In addition to “spreading the word” and “putting pressure” on elected representatives, conservatives must push for action from the Supreme Court and build networks to combat the Left. Creating their own alternative news media, independent school systems, lawfare organizations, and—most importantly—a counterweight to Hollywood, would be a good start.

“A conservative Hollywood is something that needs to be done,” Dinesh told me. “It’s doable, but it’s not easy.”

He’s correct. The audience for it is already there, waiting for someone to tell their story, address their concerns, and echo American sentiments. Independent actors, artists, and investors have not been able to unite, however, to the point where they can overcome to power of Tinsel Town’s elite.

D’Souza cited liberal filmmaker Michael Moore and how he garners support from the Democratic Party and unions, while obtaining cash and marketing with ease. D’Souza, on the other hand, says he’s lucky if the Republican Party even returns his phone calls.

He posited a theory that Republicans in D.C.–and elsewhere–are content with their piece of the Swamp and won’t risk rocking the boat.

As for his latest project, D’Souza wants Police State to accomplish two things: Give the American people a true “understanding of the mechanics of the police state,” and wakeup people up who don’t believe authoritarian tactics are being used in the United States.

“One of the things the movie does is show people who are whistleblowers or informants [and] people who know the inner workings of the police state. It’s important for people to see that,” D’Souza explained. “The second part of the movie is [showing] ordinary people who have come face-to-face with [that] police state.”

Unfortunately, there are still some who retain a false sense of security, believing the police state would never come for them or their families.

D’Souza likened these individuals to “a wildebeest who keeps grazing,” because it refuses to believe there’s a predator hiding nearby. In that analogy, he’s the member of the herd trying to alert the rest of them to the threat.

“I want to show people that this isn’t just about [Donald] Trump and it’s not just about January 6th,” he continued. “There’s a good bit of Trump and a good bit of January 6th in the movie, but there’s a whole lot more.”

D’Souza was hopeful that if citizens speak out and follow his advice for building a counterculture movement, things will get better in time.

“This is not a short-term project,” he said. “But there are many things that can be done, even in the short term, to trip up the police state. This is doable and of course I wouldn’t have made the movie if the police state was so far advanced, that nothing could be done about it. In fact, once the police state [becomes] so far advanced, movies like this one will not be able to be made.”

On the flipside, he emphasized how the film is meant to be “frightening” because it shows how dire the situation has become.

“The guy who says, ‘I’m not Trump and I didn’t go into capital and I pay my taxes so the FBI will never come banging on my door,’ it’s my obligation to show that guy that he couldn’t be more wrong,” Dinesh told me.

This warning couldn’t come at a darker time, with even more darkness on the horizon. Yet there is hope.

If ordinary citizens find a way to become something more—a symbol of heroism and bravery in the face of fear—the nation will find its way home.

As the famous German Pastor Martin Niemöller, who opposed the Nazis, once said:

“First, they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

The time has finally come to take a stand. Destiny is calling. Will America answer? For if not us, who? If not now, when?

Police State is due out in select theaters starting on October 23rd. Tickets can be purchased here.
